Server solutions for data centers continue to evolve as application and cost requirements become more demanding. Server vendors need to offer an expansive range of servers to meet customer needs. One of the common requirements is increased computing density. Supermicro has responded by offering ranges of high density servers in a 2U server footprint. One such range is the Supermicro 2U Twin available from Thinkmate, the leading custom configurator of Supermicro systems.
One of best highly available and efficient 2U servers available today is the Supermicro 2U Twin. It is a two node server in a 2U chassis that fits in the industry-standard 42U rack. The 2U chassis houses two redundant Gold-level power supplies. Unlike a Supermicro 2U server, each of the two server nodes is modular and hot-swappable to enable ease of maintenance, and to eliminate or reduce down time. The shared power supplies and 2U chassis allow for power and space savings.
Each server node in a Supermicro 2U Twin has dual multi-core CPUs with x16 non-blocking native Gen2 PCI-Express connectivity to the processor. Each node has 8 DIMM slots for memory and can be configured with processors from the Intel® Xeon® E5-26xx series and a maximum of six 3.5” or twelve 2.5” SAS/SATA hot-swappable drives for server storage. Networking options include 40Gb/s onboard QDR InfiniBand, and 20Gb/s onboard DDR InfiniBand.
With the push for increasing computing density, the need for higher power efficiency per server 1U becomes more important in order to keep operating costs affordable. The Supermicro 2U Twin servers are designed to operate at optimal efficiency as they come with Gold-level power supplies. This means that they operate at over 93% efficiency. Furthermore, these Supermicro 2U Twin power supply units use larger and slower turning 80mm fans which consume less power and generate more airflow than 40mm fans in most other power supplies.
The configurations available in the Supermicro 2U Twin range make them ideal for running HPC applications. Powerful multi-core CPU options, high memory capacity (up to 1TB per node), and high throughput network connectivity enable these servers to run workloads for applications in medical imaging, oil and gas exploration, quantum chemistry, financial simulation, genomics, and astrophysics. The modular architecture of hot-swappable nodes in each chassis allow for straightforward upgrading of server nodes. Additionally, Supermicro’s IPMI software can be used for remote management of these servers.
